FLOWERS & KISSES FOR MALALA
Opening at 12pm on Saturday 11 July 2015 along the front wall

GALLERY CO-ORDINATOR HUGH GIBBONS HAS GOOD NEWS

ALL SCHOOLS IN AND AROUND THE BRACKNELL AREA are invited to join in this unusual, warm-hearted and fun community project put in place as the summer term nears its end.

IT'S PARTLY TO MARK THE 18th BIRTHDAY of the remarkable Malala Yousafzai with an unusual gift - by creating an array of painted flowers and kisses on very public display.

SIMPLE SPLODGES OF LOTS OF BRIGHT COLOURS ARE THE KEYNOTE, though you can do delicate petalwork if that's you thing.

IT'S ALSO A CHANCE TO SHOW SOLIDARITY with the United Nations’ and other global education initiatives. Sunday 12 July is also the UN’s Malala Day, and will be celebrated by millions of young people around the world. They’ll pay tribute to A World at School and other social justice voices in support of every child’s right to primary education.

AND IT''LL BE AN EARLY GLIMPSE OF SPECIAL DEVELOPMENT GOALS that'll be emerging in the autumn.

SO THIS IS A BRACKNELL-BORN INITIATIVE that pupils and staff should remember for years to come, give their families something unusual to enjoy, and show many schools’ generosity of spirit while meeting education needs that address citizenship and support voices of social justice.

THE IDEA IS TO COVER THE BRICK WALL below the Community Gallery with an array of weatherproof wooden panels of flowers and kisses - to form a wonderful showcase of colour seen by thousands of people passing by in the months ahead. The panels will be fixed on wooden battens along the wall above the grass at St Joseph’s.

YOUR SCHOOL'S PAINTING OF FLOWERS might show one or dozens – maybe with faces. Simple Xs make great kisses – and perhaps everyone in the school could add theirs. But you do what suits time and space.

ONE IDEA IS TO HAVE A COUPLE OF PUPILS IN SCHOOL UNIFORM holding up a bouquet. But simple rough splodges of colour are fine, too.

THERE ARE A FEW SPECIFICATIONS. Panels will need to be a standard portrait size, on 9mm or 12mm plywood, and 1200mm high x 600mm wide. You can paint right to the edge - brass mirror plates will do the fixing this time (more info when you book in). Acrylic or similar weatherproof paint should be used. The name of the school must be included, in lettering not less than 40mm high – so everyone can know it's you.

ONE IDEA is to arrange for each Year to paint their own small panel (perhaps about 250mm square) which you bring together with the others and glue on.

NB PLACES in Flowers & Kisses for Malala are free but limited, and early booking is advised.

AND IN ALL SCHOOLS ANYWAY? During the weeks before, find a few moments in class or assembly, hold up air flowers and sing Happy Birthday and blow kisses north, east, south and west – ie not just for her but to children and others across the world for whom she’s become a voice for their human rights and who work to see social justice happen.
